What is Experiential Therapy?

Experiential Therapy is a therapeutic technique that utilizes expressive activities and tools to re-enact, re-experience, work through, past circumstances or relationships of the past. The use of experiential methods allows the client to use more than just language when addressing and accessing their trauma. A client working with an experiential specialist can expect to begin to explore and let go of painful feelings of shame, hurt, anger, that may have been previously blocked or inaccessible. Experiential therapies at Repose Studio include Art Therapy, Dance Movement Therapy, and Yoga Therapy.

When is Experiential Therapy Used?

This type of therapeutic intervention is commonly used in the treatment of substance use addiction, eating disorders, trauma, anger management, grief & loss and also various other types of compulsive behaviors, or behavioral addictions. It is also a useful intervention for any and all folks, who have not felt like “traditional” therapy is the right fit.

Yoga Therapy

Therapeutic Yoga was developed after several research studies indicated the positive effects of yoga on people suffering from depression and chronic pain. Therapeutic yoga uses traditional yoga postures to treat chronic health conditions. Most practitioners that use therapeutic yoga are also trained in the use of other therapeutic interventions. Therapeutic yoga can help in relieving stress, lower breathing and heart rate, reduce blood pressure and cortisol levels, and improve general quality of life. It is also shown to be greatly beneficial for folks diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depression and insomnia.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a Repose offering that involves using the artistic process in a therapy session to access hard-to-reach emotions that are often difficult to verbalize. The same way a song, a painting in a museum, or even a familiar sidewalk may evoke a memory deeply stored in your mind, working through rich symbolism through the guidance of an Art Therapist can offer you clearer insights into your emotional experience, promote psychological growth and somatic healing.
